Urubamba - Kacharpari
By tutv1980

Composed by Rosendo Huirse.
Performed by Urubamba.
Originally the song "Kacharpari" by Jorge Huirse (or named by Urubamba) was called "Balseros del Titicaca" by his father Rosendo Huirse.

...Urubamba is the name of the river which winds at the foot of Machu Picchu, the last stronghold of the Incas against European conquest. So it is altogether fitting this river should have lent its name to a quartet of Peruvian musicians (error possible of Dave Marsh) who are devoted to the preservation of the music of Inca culture...
...Urubamba is best known in Europe and North America for its contributions to a pair of Paul Simon recording. Simon first meet the band (then known as "Los Incas") when they were co-billed at the "Theatre del L'Est Parisienne" in Paris in 1965. They gave him one of their albums, and it so intrigued him that he wrote the lyrics to one of their melodies which became Simon and Garfunkel's "El Condor Pasa (If I Could)". Later, they accompanied him on "Duncan" from his first solo album, and on his 1973 concert tour (where "Kacharpari", which opens side two of this album, was recorded). It was this time that Urubamba was recorded, using the traditional Inca instruments: "quena", "antara", "charango" and "bombo"....

This description is a extract of the comment of Dave Marsh from cover of album "Urubamba" produced by Paul Simon.

The musicians who appear in the last photo of the video (except for appreciation error) from left are:
Antara: Jorge Cumbo (Argentinean)
Bombo: Emilio Arteaga (Uruguayan)
Quena: Uña Ramos (Argentinean)
Charango: Jorge Milchberg (Argentinean)

Jorge Huirse Reyes(1914 - 1992), was the most out-standing pianist, orchestra director and Peruvian composer.
... The first piece recorded in Buenos Aires for Odeon was the theme "Carnavales" of his father, Don Rosendo Huirse, who then called "Pujllay" quechua word that means "game", carnival allusive. The theme was selected as greetings for America to the station WQXR in New York in its programme "Nights in Latin America". Jorge Huirse was ...
...iantes Peruvians in this Argentine city. During the regime of General Peron, the theme "Balseros del Titicaca" of Don Rosendo under symphonic Jorge, was selected as a feature of the programme "Mensaje de Argentinidad" under the direction of local customs and actor Fernando Ochoa. The recordings and music by Jorge Huirse...

Rosendo Huirse Muñoz:(1880 1971): Teacher in Ayaviri, public employee and served in the office of Puno, definitively establishing in the city of Puno. During his restless activity, forms and directed the "Estudiantinas" as "Musical Literary Center Ayaviri", "The Centre Musical Puno" and "Musical Society Lira Carolina", participated in "Andean Bohemia", as well as in the staging of the play "The night St. John". His world compositions won several competitions, with the theme "El Picaflor", He has been a director and owner of "Eco Puno". His major musical works: "Ondas del Titicaca", "Paja Brava", "El Picaflor" "Fandanguera", "Balseros del Titicaca", "Anillito de Oro", author of the anthem music to Puno.

This description was made possible by wikipedia, Lonconaonyc and robinwayra.

El lago Titicaca
By valpard

Lake Titicaca is the highest commercially navigable lake in the world [1], at 3,812 m (12,507 feet) above sea level. Located in the Altiplano high in the Andes on the border of Peru and Bolivia, at 16°S 69°W, Titicaca has an average depth of 107 m[2], and a maximum depth of 281 m. The western part of the lake belongs to the Puno Region of Peru, and the eastern side is located in the Bolivian La Paz Department.
More than 25 rivers empty into Titicaca, and the lake has 41 islands, some of which are densely populated.
Titicaca is fed by rainfall and meltwater from glaciers on the sierras that abut the Altiplano. It is drained by the Desaguadero River, which flows south through Bolivia to Lake Poopó. This accounts for less than five per cent of the lake's water loss, however, the rest is caused by evaporation as a result of the strong winds and sunlight at this altitude.
Uros :
Titicaca is notable for a population of people who live on the Uros, a group of about 43 artificial islands made of floating reeds. These islands have become a major tourist attraction for Peru, drawing excursions from the lakeside city of Puno.
Taquile :
The people of Taquile, off the coast from Puno, are known for their fine handwoven textile products, among the highest quality in Peru. The island attracts many tourists each year.
Amantaní :
Amantaní is another small island in Lake Titicaca populated by Quechua speakers. About 800 families live in six villages on the basically circular 15-square kilometer island. There are two mountain peaks, called Pachatata (Father Earth) and Pachamama (Mother Earth), and ancient ruins on the top of both peaks. The hillsides that rise up from the lake are terraced and planted with wheat, potatoes, and vegetables. Most of the small fields are worked by hand. Long stone fences divide the fields, and cattle, sheep, and alpacas graze on the hillsides.
There are no cars on the island, and no hotels. A few small stores sell basic goods, and there is a health clinic and school. Electricity is produced by a generator and limited to a couple of hours each day.
Some of the families on Amantaní offer a meal or overnight stay to tourists, arranged through tour guides. Guests typically take food staples (cooking oil, rice, sugar) as a gift.
Isla Del Sol :
Situated on the Bolivian side of the lake with regular boat links to the Bolivian town of Copacabana, Isla del Sol ("Island of the Sun") is one of the lake's largest islands. It is the site of several important Inca ruins and its economy is mainly driven by tourism revenues. Subsistence agriculture and fishing are widely practised. (wikipedia)

Cordillera de los Andes (Peru)
By xwishmasterx
