Tutorial: A House Is Not A Home, Part 3 (of 3) This is a breakdown of the 'A House Is Not A Home' video I previously posted at the following link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXK_Vx-T0wY By way of explaination, I took a completely different approach to playing the head vs. playing the improvised portion of this song. For the first run through of the melody, I used a lot of color notes, or voicings to give the melody a particular kind of sound. In the improvised section, I took a very simple approach- one that introduces the use of 7 note modes. I limit my improvised playing To Just The 7 Notes Of A Few Scales. When you use this method, it is impossible to play a wrong note while improvising. (Really!) All 7 notes sound 'right'. Constructing improvised melodies requires other skills as well, but this is an great way to begin improvising. It builds confidence in playing improvisationally, and there is a lot of instant gratification and fun to this approach. All you need to know are a few basic scales, and then: you can't play any wrong notes! ;-) This also trains the ear to hear relationships between various chords and the scales that best fit them. I'm being a little bit sneaky with this approach. For instance, I say 'Use Bb major to improvise', when in reality it is an A Locrian mode, but the notes are the same as Bb Major Scale, so that's what I call it. At some point in the future, I plan on doing a video on how to improve the quality of improvised melodies, but this is the first step to getting there. I'm also curious if this approach 'makes sense' to others. Let me know what works and what doesn't, and I'll try to apply it to future videos.
