This is my full cover of this great song, one of Guns N' Roses's most well-known song. Don't Cry has several guitar tracks and I tried to cover all of them. I gotta say that I always liked Guns N' Roses but I never played one of their songs. It was till I make a request vid of November Rain's solos that I discovered the fantastic playing of this guys. Then I went for Sweet Child o' Mine, then a collaboration vid with my friend OCrue (Out Ta Get me) and now Don't Cry. The song is lyrically similar to "Sweet Child o' Mine" in which Axl Rose sings about his love for his future wife Erin Everly. "Think About You" was, however, written by Izzy Stradlin. Stradlin plays the guitar solo on this track. The song begins with a very fast tempo and keeps up the pace until 29 seconds from the end. The end features a haunting riff that is almost entirely different from the rest of the song that slows the tempo dramatically. The song was played during early Guns N' Roses shows in 1985 and 1986. The song was not played during the Appetite For Destruction & Use Your Illusion tours, however it did reappear in the band's setlist in 2001 and continues to be played in 2006, often with the since departed Stradlin joining his former band for the track. It's the third song on the band's 1987 debut album, Appetite for Destruction. Although it was released as a single, the song was not included in their best-of album. It reached #93 on the US Billboard charts. The song is a tribute to an infamous brand of cheap Californian wine, Night Train Express, which was extremely popular with the band during their early days, thanks mainly to its low price and high alcohol content. We were living in the Gardener Street studio, where we had one little box of a room. We had no money but we could dig up a buck to go down to this liquor store. It happened to have this great wine called Nightrain that would fuck you up for a dollar. Five dollars and you'd be gone. We lived off this stuff. Duff - Hit Parader March 1988 Slash describes Nightrain a "an anthem that we came up with on the spot". The original idea for the song came when Slash and rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin wrote the main riff whilst they were sitting on the floor of the band's practice room. The next day, Slash was ill so Stradlin finished writing the music with Duff McKagen; however they did not write any lyrics. The song remained incomplete until one night when the band were walking down Palm Avenue whilst sharing a bottle of Night Train. Someone started singing 'I'm on the night train!' and the whole band joined in, with Axl Rose improvising the lines in between: "Bottoms up!" "Fill my cup!" etc. "Nightrain" was born. After this initial inspiration, the band finished the song within a day. Slash describes in his autobiography how Nightrain is his favourite song to perform live: "That song has a rhythm to it in the verses that from the start always made me go crazy. The first time we played it, even, I started jumping up and down - I couldn't help it. When we had our huge stage later on, I'd run the length of it, jump off the amplifiers, and lose it just about every single time we played it. I'm not sure why, but no other song we've ever played live made me move like that." I wrote this song for this girl who was gonna have a band and she was gonna call it Rocket Queen. She kinda kept me alive for a while. The last part of the song is my message to this person, or anybody else who can get something out of it. It's like there's hope and a friendship note at the end of the song. For that song there was also something I tried to work out with various people—a recorded sex act. It was somewhat spontaneous but premeditated; something I wanted to put on the record. —Axl Rose An Interview With The Gunners, Hit Parader - March 1988 A credit in the booklet for Appetite for Destruction reads "Barbi (Rocket Queen) Von Grief", implying that she was "this girl" Rose mentions in the quote. Slash states that he and Duff McKagan wrote the main riff to "Rocket Queen" when they first got together, before either of them had joined Hollywood Rose or L.A. Guns. It has also been said that Rose brought a woman, Adriana Smith, to the studio for recording. Steve Thompson, an engineer on the album, said the following in an interview: Axl wanted some pornographic sounds on Rocket Queen, so he brought a girl in and they had sex in the studio. We wound up recording about 30 minutes of sex noises. If you listen to the break on Rocket Queen it's in there. It was later stated in the music magazine Classic Rock, as well as Rolling Stone, that the person who had been recorded performing sex noises on the song was Adriana Smith, an on-off girlfriend of drummer Steven Adler, who also allegedly had an intimate relationship with frontman Rose. Slash states that though Von Grief was only eighteen at the time, she had a notorious reputation and was "a queen of the underground scene back then. She'd eventually become a madam, but Axl was infatuated with her at the time." She was also mentioned in the acknowledgments section on L.A. Guns self-titled album. At a handful of shows during Guns N' Roses 1991-1993 Use Your Illusion Tour, Axl Rose would sometimes sing a small part of a song called It Tastes Good, Don't It? in the middle of the song. It Tastes Good, Don't It? had been written by the band in 1988, as they hoped its explicit lyrics would get them thrown off a tour with Iron Maiden. A performance of this song can be seen on the second half of the band's Live In Tokyo DVD.
