Following a hard-fought come-from-behind victory over Indiana, the Bulls had to face their old nemesis, the Detroit Pistons, at the Stadium in Chicago. It was a low-scoring game with lots of hustle plays on both sides, lots of bruises and cuts -- Isiah alone had to leave the game several times. Bulls dominated the boards all night. After scoring just 32 points in the first half, the Pistons, led by Isiah Thomas, shot 70 % in the third quarter for 35 points, 15 of them coming from their point guard. Thomas also hit a miracle three at the end of the period to give his team momentum and a one-point lead going into the fourth. The Bulls outscored Detroit 20-19 in the last quarter -- it was the 5th time in 5 games they held their opponents under 20 in the 4th. Jordan and Thomas both had a chance to seal the win at the end, but they missed and the game went into overtime. With seconds left, Jordan drove to the basket for a layup and got fouled. He made both freethrows to give Chicago a one-point lead. Joe Dumars hit a jumpshot at the other end and the Bulls called their last timeout. With four seconds left in overtime, Jordan got the ball, dribbled hard to his right, left Dumars and Polynice behind in the dust and hit a long three for the win. Bulls 98 - Pistons 96. All game long the Pistons' backcourt gave Chicago real trouble -- 54 points by Isiah Thomas and Joe Dumars. Isiah was 12-for-28 from the field for 32 points and 8 assists. Scottie Pippen had a triple double with 16 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists, already his second in the early 92/93 season, but he didn't score in the 4th quarter and overtime, shooting 7-for-23 from the field. Horace Grant didn't score at all, but he collected some key rebounds and held Mark Aguirre, Detroit's leading scorer, to only six points. Michael Jordan played with a bad back, wasn't able to drive to the hoop and had to rely on his mid-range game. Despite his injury, Jordan went 13-for-24 from the field along with 10 rebounds and 4 assists in 52 minutes.
