According to Jason Stearns, a Nairobi-based senior analyst in the International Crisis Group, children make up 40 to 50 per cent of the militia forces. The Mayi-Mayi recruit children through force or manipulation. They also play on superstition to increase their ranks. 'Mayi' is a Swahili word for water, and the Mayi-Mayi say that magic powers turn bullets directed at them to water. [View \| Download]	Landing "runway" 12 Walikale, Congo By jscott128 Landing on runway 12 (actually just a road with a centerline painted on it) in Walikale, Democratic Republic of Congo, a regular destination for AirServ International. Walikale is in the north-east portion of Congo, roughly 75 nm west of the city of Goma. At its narrowest, the trees are probably close to 5 to 7 ft from the wing tips of the Cessna Grand Caravan. Notice a couple of things: One, the wreckages of a couple planes that didnt quite make it which now serve as a threshold marking and reminder to stay on centerline and Two, the 30 degree bend in the road to the right. After landing, everybody and everything gets unloaded and we have to turn the plane around by hand with the help of the locals. Then its load back up and takeoff in the opposite direction that we landed in. Because there isnt enough distance from where we park at the end to the bend that you can see when on final, we taxi close to the turn. We end up going around the bend on the ground at around 30-40 knots, making sure to use rudder only and no brakes, and takeoff only once we get straightened out again. It can make for a few tense moments because until we get to the turn theres no way of knowing if theres any oncoming traffic (people, trucks, goats, whatever) and could leave us little time to react and get stopped. Overall though, a lot of fun and keeps things a little interesting here in Africa. Fue así que entre varias alternativas eligieron un terreno situado en Avenida La Plata al 1700. La institución carecía de fondos como para pensar en encarar una obra de tal magnitud, pero las ganas y el esfuerzo pudieron más y un año después la idea se había hecho realidad... El 7 de mayo de 1916 cuando el Ciclón venció a Estudiantes de La Plata por 2 a 1 se inauguró el estadio conocido como "El Gasómetro". Por ese entonces San Lorenzo alquilaba el terreno; pero el crecimiento de la institución permitió comenzar a pensar en adquirirlo definitivamente. La compra se concretó el 6 de septiembre de 1928 fecha a partir de la cual el "Gasómetro" empezó a crecer y a incorporar nuevas instalaciones. En 1929 la capacidad del estadio llegó a 75.000 localidades, lo cual, sumado a la inmejorable ubicación que poseía lo convirtió en sede de los partidos de la selección nacional en innumerables ocasiones. En 1939 se incorporó la iluminación artificial, convirtiéndolo en uno de las canchas mejor equipadas del país.
