[View \| Download]	Festival Artístico de ABAZORTO By tonaca01 La Asociación de Beneficiarios de Agua Potable de la Zona Rural de Tonacatepeque (ABAZORTO) desarrolló este festival artístico el pasado domingo 7 de septiembre en el parque de Tonacatepeque, para mostrarnos los beneficios obtenidos mediante el trabajo coordinado y la unión de 6 cantones para el desarrollo de proyectos de agua potable, mejorar el medio ambiente, el desarrollo social de sus comunidades, el fomento de la educación y la salud. A pesar de las adversidades y con el apoyo de otras asociaciones similares, ONG`s y el Gobierno Vasco, han logrado grandes avances, introducción de tuberías, inicio de la construcción de tanques y otros beneficios, entre los que mencionan la disminución de enfermedades gastrointestinales al ingerir agua potable, la eliminación de riesgos a niños, mujeres y ancianos al ya no tener que desplazarse en quebradas y caminos de difícil acceso para ir a traer agua o a bañarse a los ríos, el permitir tiempo a los niños para estudiar y asistir a la escuela, mejorar la convivencia familiar al evitar que las mujeres se desplacen de sus casas para obtener agua; por otra parte, aumentar las cosechas al tener mejor capacidad de riego, mejorar las condiciones del medio ambiente y del hogar al sembrar árboles frutales; en fín, un mejor desarrollo social de los pobladores de las zonas beneficiadas. Definitivamente un ejemplo de lo que el trabajo, la unión y la voluntad de la gente pueden lograr, muchas felicidades y que sigan cosechando muchos éxitos en sus proyectos. [View \| Download]	San Juan, Puerto Rico: Checking out Isla de Cabras By travelandtransitions On this gorgeous Saturday (no rain, finally) we took coastal highway 165 into San Juan from Dorado, a beautiful drive along the waterfront without any traffic whatsoever. We first explored a little stretch of land called "Isla de Cabras" (Goats Island) which is a tiny island strategically located at the entrance of San Juan Bay. Its historically significant position is evidenced by a fortification called "El Cañuelo" which is not accessible to visitors. The island was even used as a leper colony in the late 1800s. From there we drove back past the main power station and the Bacardi Rum factory to the Ferry Terminal in Cataño where we took a ferry across the bay into Old San Juan. I rediscovered many of the places I had already visited earlier, including the fortress San Felipe del Morro and the adjacent San Juan Cemetery. I was enchanted by the narrow, cobble-stoned streets with their brightly coloured stuccoed houses. In the courtyard of the historic building "El Cuartel de Ballaja" I came across a major festival for guitarists who play the local "cuarto" guitar, and two teenage boys played a little Spanish song for me on this unique instrument. I even caught images of a local wedding right in front of the Cathedral of San Juan. At dusk the Christmas lights on the Plaza de Armas and along the Calle Fortaleza came to life. As the sun was going down I positioned myself on the Plaza de la Rogativa to catch the sunset and then walked through the Puerta de San Juan for a stroll along the waterfront walkway at the foot of the Old City Walls. A nice final evening to our 5-day adventure in Puerto Rico. [View \| Download]	San Juan, Puerto Rico: Plaza de Colon - nativity scene By travelandtransitions I started the morning off early with a walk through the extensive grounds of the Embassy Suites / Golden Sands resort in Dorado, and around mid-day we made our way into the Puerto Rican capital -- San Juan. Old San Juan is a beautifully restored colonial city and was founded in 1521. We parked our vehicle close to the Puerto Rican Capitol and started walking west towards Old San Juan past Plaza Colon which features a statue of Christopher Columbus. After my initial explorations of the popular shopping street Calle Fortaleza I discovered the Governor's Mansion (la Fortaleza) where two local policemen enlightened me about the significance of this building. Then I came across the Parque de las Palomas where hundreds of pigeons swarm the tourists who feed them. Walking north I explored the Atlantic waterfront, the Old San Juan Cemetery and one of San Juan's most imposing fortifications: Fort San Felipe del Morro, begun in 1539, which today is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We parked our vehicle close to the Puerto Rican Capitol and started walking west towards Old San Juan past Plaza Colon which features a statue of Christopher Columbus. After my initial explorations of the popular shopping street Calle Fortaleza I discovered the Governor's Mansion (la Fortaleza) where two local policemen enlightened me about the significance of this building. Then I came across the Parque de las Palomas where hundreds of pigeons swarm the tourists who feed them. Walking north I explored the Atlantic waterfront, the Old San Juan Cemetery and one of San Juan's most imposing fortifications: Fort San Felipe del Morro, begun in 1539, which today is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
